VOLENTE FIRE DEPARTMENT

[Under Construction]

Community Leaders Wanted

There are a number of ways that residents can serve our community. They include:  fire fighter, EMT's, support personnel and members of our auxiliary.  The department provides all of the training required to become a fire fighter and EMT. Although it takes a big time commitment to complete the required fire fighter and EMT training, we are sure that you will find the experience rewarding.  All members do not have to be interior qualified fire fighters or EMT's.

A number of our volunteers support fire ground operations by operating our water tender, operating our fire engines on the fire scene, providing logistical support on the scene and around the station. The number of hours required to be proficient in these areas varies by member, but should take between 25-50 hours.  They include: driver training, pump operations, Hazmat Awareness (OSHA requirement) and general emergency scene safety.

Auxiliary members spend about 3- 4 hours a month. There is one meeting a month, and several projects a year that are hosted by the auxiliary to support the Department.  These include the annual Fish Fry, Pancake Breakfast and Community Blood Drive.

EMT training consists of approximately 140 hours of class room time, ambulance ride outs, skills proficiency and hospital time.  Continuing education (CE) hours are required to maintain National Registry certification. This consists of about 65 hours every 2  years.  These hours are offered through in house training at the station, local seminars and other CE opportunities. ECA level of training consists of 40 hours of formal training.

Basic volunteer fire fighter certification consists of approximately 167 hours of training.  Many of these hours can be completed on line. Skills can be completed in a "boot camp program" and scheduled sessions with our career staff and training officers.

All operations members are required to attend at least 50% of all scheduled training as well as maintain their CE's for their level of certification. A typical time commitment after the completion of formal training programs ranges from 15-30 hours a month.  This consists of responding to calls, attending 2 training sessions monthly, ride outs with the career staff and general duties and tasks that are performed by our volunteers.

Members are provided all of the essential equipment needed to carry out their responsibilities. We are notified of all alarms via voice and alpha pagers (provided). CTECC, the dispatching center for all fire departments in Travis County, provides this service for us. The Department averages 10-12 calls per month.  Our calls happen at all times of the day, seven days a week.

All applicants must complete a DPS background check and provide all of the information required in the application. We hope that you stop by the station to learn more about your fire department.
